Engineering Week

The pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th class participated in a number of events for Engineering week.  They participated in a webinar from Galway Ocean exploreres in which they learned how engineering has been influnecd by sea animals and plants.  They worked in pairs making, testing, demonstrating and demonstrating STEM kits.  William Finnegan a lecturer in Civil Engineering and Energy System University Galway visited our classroom and spoke to the pupils on engineering jobs and research projects taking place in the university.

United Nations

In Geography and History the pupils learned about the United Nation, it's importance and Ireland's participation since it joined in 1973.   The pupils examined Peace keeping medals from the Lebannon and East Timor and got to wear the United Nations beret.  The UN emblem is blue in colour because blue represents peace in opposition to red for war and the laurel leaves symbolise peace.

Pointillism!

The pupils experimented with the painting technique 'Pointillism which is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image. The technique relies on the ability of the eye and mind of the viewer to blend the colour spots into a fuller range of tones.

Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886.

The pupils used this technique to create images of blossoming cherry trees.

Christmas Performance

On Thursday the 14th December the pupils performed in front of a jampacked classroom.  They sang  Christmas Carols, recited poetry, played ukuleles and tin whistles for the school community.

Science Day

On Thursday the pupils took part in activities for Science week.  They performed a number of Physics experiments; exploring the centre of gravity of the forces that are around us!

Book Week

The pupils had a super Book Week in which they daily visited the 'Book Fair, enjoyed DEAR time, wrote Character Profiles and Book Reports. 

 On Wednesday the author Natasha Mac a'Bhaird visited our school.  She spoke to the pupils about all the children's novels she has written and her favourite a book on Irelands' International running star Sonia O'Sullivan.  

As tradition every Friday of Book Week the pupils dress up as their favourite character and once again their costumes were amazing.  Well done to all!

Halloween Art

Pupils drew scary skulls and coloured them using chalk and pastels!

EU Code Week

The pupils of 4th, 5th and 6th classes participated in EU Code week.   The pupils created 2D Shapes using Scratch.  They all successfully drew squares, rectangles, hexagons, octagons and circles!.  They then were given a challege to draw the olympic flag.  Well done to Caoimhe and Maria who were the first to complete the task.

6th Class Woodwork Lesson 1 October 13th

Woodwork Club  - Lesson 2

Our pupils from 6th Class made fantastic progress on their flower boxes again today. This project will run for six weeks in term 1.

The first two weeks involves the preparation of the pieces which is mostly sanding and sizing.

The second two weeks are the assembly stage which see the pupils lining up their timber,  drilling holes and screwing them together. 

The final two weeks is finishing the boxes which will see the students sand any rough edges, varnishing their creations and finally adding their names in decorative print to the side of each piece.

Maths Week

Math's week took place between the 16th and 20 of October.  Each day the pupils participated in extra Math's activities such as Target Board quizzes, Count Down, Daily Challenge and SCRATCH programming.  The week was coordinated by Ms Tannion and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

6th Class Woodwork Lesson


Pupils from 6th class got the new Woodwork project off to a great start today.  Following on from the success of the window boxes last year we decided to replicate that project again. More flower boxes it is.

The pupils sketched pictures and colored them using charcoal of historical buildings in the parish of Ardrahan; Cregaclare House, Monksfield House, Castle Taylor, Mausoleum and Ardrahan Castle.

Pop Art!

The pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th class studied the novel 'Hole' by Louis Sacher and integrated  their English with Art and created some very colourful covers for the novel!

Spanish Lessons

The pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th class thoroughly enjoyed the eight week Spanish program which was part of the 'Say Yes to Languages' a language sampler programme funded by the Department of Education.

Geography - Make a Town!

Pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th class participated in Make a Town Workshop in conjunction with the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park.  The pupils discussed what buildings you would find in a town and in groups created their own town.

Maths Time - Length

Pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th class practiced measuring length by making standing jumps and them measuring the distance they jumped.

Pupils made hearts using clay and then painted them.

Maths Time - 3D Objects!

The pupils in 5th and 6th class explored 3D Objects by make models and dividing them into groups based on their properties.  The made prisms and pyramids using cardboard and ice-pop sticks.

Grandparents Day 

On Webnesday the 25th January 2023 pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th celebrated the day by writing Acrostic poems about their grandparents,, making them cards  and visting or telephoning their grandparents that evening.

6th Class Woodwork Lesson November 30th

The flower boxes are really starting to take shape now.  The 6th class pupils have taken a lot of care to sand, measure, smooth, drill and screw the various pieces of timber into place.  Each box is approx 2 feet long and would make a welcome addition to any windowsill in Ardrahan.

6th Class Woodwork Lesson November 18th

The flower boxes are really beginning to take shape now.

They had pre-drilled the holes in the sides of their boxes. They screwed the side panels on today.

Aren't they a talented bunch in 6th class! We certainly think so.



Science Week

During Science weeks we  investigated extracting DNA from bananas and finding the centre of gravity by balancing a cardboard clown.  Sarah Ruane a PHD student from Teagasc, Athenry visited our classroom and talked to us about the life cycle of sheep, breeds of sheep and the effect of them them eating different types of plants on the environment.

Book Week

Greta fun was had during book week as pupils participated in a wide range of activities; DEAR Time, visits to Book Fair, Book quiz, Character quiz, dressed up as our favourite book characters, wrote Character profiles and Story Summaries.

Poster Projects on Eight Polluted Locations in the World.

Report Writing

The pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th classes selected a famous person of their choice and wrote a report on them.  They then presented their report using 'Microsoft Power point'.

Georgian Dublin!

In History the pupils learned about the Georgian period in Dublin and how the uses of these house have changed over the years, how their internal structure has changed but exterior preserved.  The pupils recreated the houses in Art class.

Homes in our Community

In Geography class the pupils examined homes in our area where people live now and in the past.  The homes varied from Norman Castles, to Landlord  mansions, to thatch cottages and modern homes.  In Art class the pupils drew the different homes using charcoal.  Here are some of the homes they drew!

Graduation Class 2022

Best wishes to our 6th class of 2022.  We had a lovely graduation ceremony on Wednesday the 22nd June 2022.  The ceremony commenced with a prayer service led by Fr Roche, the pupils then read their favourite memories, watched a powerpoint on their time spent in Ballyglass, last bit of advice from Mrs Lynskey and Mrs Kelleher and finished with tea and cake!

Active school week

Super fun was had during active school week in 5th and 6th Class from 13th to 17th June 2022.  The pupils participated in the following activities and sports during the week - yoga, orienteering, Gaelic football blitz, Cuman Na mBunscoil County Sports, Whole School Walk, Sports Day and School Tours.

Art Class

Over the past two weeks the pupils in 5th and 6th have been making diorama art of rooms of their choice.  They were very creative in their designs, decorations and colour schemes!

Sacrament of Confirmation

Congratulations to our 6th class pupils who were Confirmed on Tuesday the 3rd of May by Bishop Brendan Kelly in St Teresa's church Labane. 

Woodwork Class

6th class completed their Bird Boxes today. They spent several week measuring , cutting, sanding, gluing and screwing them together.  They learned lots of new skills which they can hopefully put to good use in the future.

Vegetable Garden

We planted potatoes, strawberries and onions in our raised vegetable garden on Friday the 8th April 2022.  The potatoes and strawberries had been growing in our class room for the past 4 weeks before we planted them outside.

We have planted lettuce seeds in trays, strawberry plants and potato seeds in our classroom.  We have prepared a raised bed in our school garden and will fill with the plants from our classroom just before the Easter holidays.

6th Class Woodwork Lesson 6

In this lesson the woodwork pupils screwed their, pre-glued, birdboxes together with 1.5 inch screws.

They put 4 screws in the front, top, bottom and sides of each birdbox using a power drill.

Haven't they done well so far!

Monday Engineering Week

Pupils made telephones using paper cups, string and paper clips.  They really worked!

Tuesday  Engineering Week

We made bridges and tested how many books they could hold.  Gloria, Caylum and James won as their bridge held 60 books!

Wednesday Engineering Week

We learned how the combustion chamber in the engine of a car works.  We all tested it without the fuel burning!

Friday Engineering Week

Aine Laffin a chemical engineer from Boston Scientific visited our school and demonstrated to us how 'stints' work in hearts.  It was really interesting!

6th Class Woodwork Lesson 5

In  today's woodwork lesson the pupils began the assembly stage of their Birdbox project. They used wood glue to stick the various pieces of their birdbox together.

6th class along with Mr Healy have started a new Woodwork programme where they will make a bird house over a 6 week period (13th January to 17th February 2022).

The pupils in 5th and 6th class created robots using the LEGO Wedo sets and them programmed them to move, change colour and play music.

St Brigid's Cross

On the 1st of February the feast of Saint Brigid the pupils from 5th and 6th class made St Brigid crosses from clay.

Family Names

In history we did a project on our surnames.  We  researched our surnames; where they originated, their coat of arms and our family tree. Finally we made posters of all our family information we collected and displayed them on our classroom wall.

Texaco Art Competition

During the last month we participated in the  Texaco Children's Art compaction .  We all drew a  variety of different pictures and coloured them as well .  We all spent a lot of time on them.  They have turned out great and fingers crossed one of us might win!

Marathon Challenge

Over the last two months (42 days of school)  5th & 6th class pupils ran 14 laps of the court which is 1km each day.   When we had our very 1st marathon completed our school principal Ms Loughrey-Lynskey presented us with  lovely t-shirts,  neck warmers and  medals.

'Ballyglass Robin' By Mai and Kerrie

In January we drew robins to honour our Ballyglass robin who visits us every day.  The cheeky robin comes into the school every lunch time and even pretends to be the teacher by sitting on Mrs Kelleher`s chair.
