Say Yes! to languages

Ballyglass NS Recognised for its Commitment to Languages

School Celebrates Five Years of Say Yes to Languages Programme

APRIL 2026: Ballyglass NS, Ardrahan, is celebrating five years of participating in the national Say Yes to Languages (SYTL) programme, which is facilitated by Post-Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI) and funded by the Department of Education and Youth. As part of the five-year celebration, Ballyglass NS received a special SYTL 5-Year Anniversary Certificate, recognising the school’s commitment to giving pupils access to a wider world of languages and cultures.

The Say Yes to Languages programme gives primary school children the opportunity to experience a new language and learn about different cultures in a fun and engaging way. Since joining the programme in 2021 pupils at Ballyglass NS have had the opportunity to learn: French and Spanish

Commenting on the celebrations, School Principal Mrs. Nicola Lynskey said: We are delighted to celebrate five years of Say Yes to Languages at Ballyglass NS Receiving the special anniversary certificate is a wonderful recognition of our pupils’ enthusiasm and our school’s commitment to language learning. As languages become part of the new Primary Curriculum, this programme has given our pupils a strong foundation and a real love for learning about the wider world.

This year marks a major milestone for language learning nationally. The redeveloped Primary School Curriculum, which includes Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) as part of the Language Specification, marks an important step forward in enhancing children’s language learning. The SYTL programme is an important stepping stone in supporting schools, teachers and pupils in this transition—building confidence, curiosity, and enthusiasm for exploring new languages.

Senior class teacher, Andy Coen: “Say Yes to Languages has had a really positive impact on our school community. The programme helps pupils connect with the wider world and brings great energy into the classroom. It gives children the confidence to try out new words and explore different cultures. It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity grow over each year.”

The national programme, led by PPLI, is an opportunity to introduce pupils to a new language and culture over a ten-week module. The past five years has seen over 1900 schools take part nationwide. Now in its fifth year, it provides a flexible and engaging introduction to languages, encouraging a lifelong interest in language learning. Applications are now open for schools wishing to participate in Say Yes to Languages for the 2026/2027 school year, which will mark the sixth year of the programme. Schools can find full details and application information at languagesconnect.ie

Our March “Terrific Thursday” was a great success, with an Easter egg hunt that brought excitement to all of the children. Pupils followed a series of clues around the school grounds, working their way step by step until they reached the final location where they received their Easter eggs.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our local shop, Centra Labane, for their very generous donation of Easter eggs. Their kindness helped make the day even more special for the children.

🐄 A wonderful day on the farm! 🐄

Rang 1 and our Infant classes had a fantastic visit to Séimí’s family dairy farm recently, where we got a real taste of life on the farm. The children were very excited to see the cows being milked in the milking parlour and to visit the baby calves in their cosy shed.

One of the highlights of the day was getting the chance to feed a calf with a bottle – a moment the children won’t forget anytime soon!

We learned so much from Pat and Rachel about how cows are milked and what life is like on a working dairy farm. After such an interesting visit, we might even have a few future farmers around Ballyglass!

Míle buíochas to Pat and Rachel Holland for welcoming us so warmly and for finishing our visit with some very tasty chocolate treats. It was a trip to remember

🐶 MADRA Visit 🐶

On Tuesday, March 10th, we were delighted to welcome Carrie and Aideen from MADRA to Ballyglass National School, along with Carrie’s wonderful dog, Sam – an 11½-year-old collie mix rescue dog. The visitors delivered two engaging workshops for our students about responsible dog ownership and how to communicate safely and kindly with dogs.

The children learned all about what it means to care properly for a dog, including looking after their health and wellbeing, feeding them the right food, giving medication when needed, walking them safely, and even remembering the important job of scooping the poops! The sessions were fun, informative, and full of useful tips about being kind and responsible around dogs.

Everyone was especially excited to meet Sam, who was a fantastic ambassador for rescue dogs. All the students had the chance to gently pet him, which was a highlight of the day.

Carrie and Aideen were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and the students thoroughly enjoyed the workshops. Thanks to the generosity of our Ballyglass families, the children also brought in donations and raised over €100 for the MADRA charity, which relies largely on public support to continue its wonderful work rescuing and caring for dogs.

It was a fantastic visit and a day we will all remember! 🐕
